Bishop Mar Sarhad Jammo's Pastoral Visit 2011

Bishop Mar Sarhad Jammo Pastoral Visit

On Friday January 28, 2011 His Excellency Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo, the Bishop of the Chaldean Catholic Diocese of St. Peter the Apostle for Chaldeans & Assyrians, arrived at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Ceres, CA. The parishioners welcomed their beloved Bishop with great joy. The diocesan shepherd spent the evening with the parishioners explaining the process of the blessing, which, with God’s help, was to take place on Sunday January 30, 2011. We were also honored to have Father Andrawis Toma, the Pastor of Saint Mary Catholic Church in Campbell city( San Jose, CA), join us this evening.

Following the Morning Prayer on Sunday January 30 the service started at ten o’clock at St. Matthew Catholic Church. The blessing ceremony began with a procession as three men and six women lined up down the center aisle of the Church. Following them were the Church Deacon and Servers/Shamashe, the Church Pastor Fr. Michael Barota, and our beloved Bishop, His Excellency Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo. As the opening prayer of the Holy Mass began, we proceeded up the aisle and stood before the Altar. Lakhu Mara prayer began and the Setra- veil of the altar opened showing the beautiful image of our resurrected Savior. On this day, in the presence of hundreds of faithful at St. Matthew Church, nine members were given blessings. Two men were blessed as Servers/Shamashe, and the third as a Reader. For the first time at this Church, six women were also blessed as Readers.

Indeed it is a great honor and a privilege for all of us who received this blessing. For years we’ve had, and still do to this day, great love and eagerness to serve our Lord, Jesus Christ. This is a way for us to take another step forward in our journey of faith—a step that brought us closer to Christ the Lord and the Blessed Mother, Mary. Many of us were not used to the idea of female Readers. I, Arbella Rasho, had my doubts about receiving this blessing for I worried about the responsibility that it comes with. However, after our Bishop spoke to us on Friday (01-28-11), he reassured us that Christ chose women to relay His Word to the people. Our Bishop gave us the example of when Jesus had resurrected and told Mary Magdalene to go tell His disciples that He is risen. “Go tell them.” It became clear to me that this is what the Lord is calling me to do. At that moment, every doubt fled my mind. I was completely and whole-heartedly ready to serve our Lord, Jesus Christ and His Church, in every way Christ calls me for.

When time came for us to receive the blessing, we approached the Altar. Our Bishop reminded us that upon taking this blessing, we were agreeing to be servants of Christ. He then cut a piece of our hair to symbolize removing some of the weight of sin. He placed our new collars over our heads and gave us the blessing. We then took the Bible into our hands, kissed it and placed it upon our heads.
