The Seven Catholic Holy Sacraments

† Anointing of the Sick †

Special Ceremonies for Experiencing
God's Saving Presence; an outward sign of an inward Grace

"14Is any man sick among you? Let him bring in the priests of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer of faith shall save the sick man: and the Lord shall raise him up: and if he be in sins, they shall be forgiven him." James 5:14-15

Anointing of the SickTraditionally referred to as Extreme Unction or Last Rites, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered both to the dying and to those who are gravely ill or are about to undergo a serious operation, for the recovery of their health and for spiritual strength, and if need be, the remission of sins. Anointing of the Sick "spiritual health" is the second Sacrament of healing. It is the sign of the healing presence of Christ in the world- the celebration of His promise that we will have abundant life with Him. In this Sacrament, a priest anoints the sick with oil blessed specifically for that purpose.

Meditation
PrayerHear us, Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, and in Your goodness send Your Holy angel from heaven to watch over and protect all who live in this home, to be with them and give them comfort and encouragement; through Christ our Lord.
We call on Your Holy Name to pour out Your Grace on the bodies of the sick.
Strengthen them by Your might, protect them by Your power, through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

The Holy Father said the "profound mystery" of the Sacrament is expressed in a "biblical icon," the parable of the Good Samaritan.... Read More
