Saint Peter Diocese Youth Convention 2010

The 2010 Youth Convention

The 2010 Youth Convention of Saint Peter the Apostle Diocese was held at St. Matthew Parish in Ceres, CA, from Thursday, July 1st, to Sunday, July 4th. The theme of the convention, centered around callings and listening to God, centered around Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare, not for woe! plans to give you a future full of hope."

Youth, gathering from every parish in the diocese, arrived at St. Matthew on Thursday for registration. Many had spent a good part of the day in buses. As each parish arrived, it's youth were greeted with a zurna and dahola, accompanying them to greetings and dancing. After registering, they gathered and met each other over dinner which was prepared by the parish volunteers and parents of St. Mathew Church. After evening prayer service, a meeting was held among the youth leaders to discuss the upcoming days. With much fanfare the Convention had arrived.

H.G. Mar Sarhad Jammo was unfortunately unable to attend the event, but the Most Reverend Archdeacon Sabri is the Vicar General and was the official representative of H.G Mar Sarhad. H.G. Mar Bawai Soro was present, along with Msgr Felix Shabi. Joining them were Fr. Michael Barota, the pastor of St. Matthew's Parish, Fr. Yoshia Sana, Fr. Samuel Dinkha, Fr. Awraha Mansoor, Fr. Noel Gorgis, and Fr. Andrew Younan.

There were more than 330 youth registered. Together with chaperones and the volunteers of the parish, there were over four hundred people participating in the youth convention. On Friday July 2nd, we started the day with morning breakfast which was prepared by the wonderful staff and volunteers of St. Mathew Church. Following breakfast, a procession was led by a representative from each Church by holding their own church banner. After each youth group entered the church, Morning Prayer was led by H.G. Mar Bawai Soro. After Morning prayer, Father Michael and myself (Ashour Adam) welcomed all the participants that came to these years youth convention. Then the very energized Fr. Jude, our guest speaker for the first half of the day took over and led the first lecture. After Fr. Jude's lecture all the youth split up into 16 different groups for our first workshop. The Youth interacted with each other as they talked about Fr. Jude's lecture. They were also given a task to draw what they had learned from Fr. Jude's lecture. It was great to see the creativity of our youth on what they drew. It was truly remarkable.
