The Seven Catholic Holy Sacraments

† Confirmation †

Special Ceremonies for Experiencing
God's Saving Presence; an outward sign of an inward Grace

"14Now when the apostles, who were in Jerusalem, had heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John. 15Who, when they were come, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost. 16For he was not as yet come upon any of them; but they were only baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17Then they laid their hands upon them, and they received the Holy Ghost." Acts 8:14-17

ConfirmationThe Sacrament of Confirmation is the second of the three sacraments of Initiation because, historically, it was administered immediately after the Sacrament of Baptism.
Confirmation perfects our baptism and brings us the graces of the Holy Spirit that were granted to the Apostles on Pentecost Sunday.
Confirmation "strength and growth", it is conferred by the anointing with Sacred Chrism "oil mixed with balsam and consecrated by the bishop", which is done by the laying on of the hand of the minister. It is called Confirmation because it confirms and strengthens Baptismal Grace- the Sacrament of Christian maturity.

Meditation
PrayerCome Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of thy faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth thy Spirit, and they shall be created.
And you shall renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray,
O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of thy faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolation, through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

The Pope, bundled up in a white winter coat on this frigid and overcast day, continued his catechesis on the seven Sacraments, telling the crowds gathered in St. Peter's Square that Confirmation is "linked inseparably to Baptism."...Read More
